John H. Herbster, 73, of Rushville, passed away at 6:54 PM, Monday, April 16, 2018, at his home.
He was born on February 5, 1945, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of John “Fritz” and Sadie (Briggs) Herbster. He married Norma Bedenbender on January 1, 1979, in Rushville and she survives
Also surviving are six children Nikki Wenger of Rushville, John Herbster and wife Jen, of Cuba, David Meyer and wife Tammy, Michelle Carty and husband Rick, Becky Loughary and husband Richard all of Rushville, Angie Trone and husband Scott of Frederick, ten grandchildren Breiane Ham and husband Chris, Taylor Trone and fiancée Cody Ren, Jayme Trone and fiancée Trace Cooper, Madalyn Trone, Faleesha Bell, Cydney Carty, James Carty, Erin Herbster, Ryan Loughary and Brandon Loughary, nine great grandchildren Kyndall, Karlee and Rylan Ham, Olivia Ren, Gage Cooper, Gracelynn Crook, Kayden Bell, Arianna Bell, Nalani Bell, one sister Fritzie Harper and husband Jim of Clayton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Jordan Nikole Wenger, brother Louie Hammer, and niece Janet Kay Harper.
John served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1965. He worked as a mechanic at Brown Motors and Gentry Motors both in Macomb. In 1978, he began working in the maintenance department at Western Illinois University. In 1990, he began working as an independent flooring installer, retiring in 2015.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling, the Schuyler American Legion Post #4, 40 et 8, a local fishing club and the Mascouten Bay Long Rifle Club. He volunteered with Jenkins Racing and was a softball and Little League coach. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, motorcycles, and hunting. Most important was his love for his family, grandkids and great grandkids.
Services will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 20, 2018, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville, with Reverend Mike Courson officiating. Interment will follow in the Palm Cemetery, west of Rushville, with military rites by the United States Air Force Honor Detail and the Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville. A prayer service will be conducted at the conclusion of the visitation. Memorials are suggested to his family.
