Terry LaVern Allen, 74, of Camden, passed away at 11:36 PM, Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at his home.
He was born on November 25, 1943, in Schuyler County, Illinois,the son of Gilbert E. and Julia A (Prunty) Allen. He married Lela Irene Gabbert on September 10, 1963, at the Camden United Methodist Church and she survives.
Also surviving are three children Tela Su Montgomery and husband Ken of Mt. Sterling, Tony Lee Allen and fiancée Bev Crenshaw of Rushville, Leslie LaVern Allen and friend Susan Pittman of Frederick, six grandchildren Dustin Allen and wife Ashley, Kaitlyn Marie Haschemeyer and husband Jon, Austin Allen, Kreeden Allen, Sierra Nicole Allen and Shye Ann Allen, five great grandchildren Briar Lee Allen, Olivia Rose Allen, Elizabeth Mae “Lizzy” Haschemeyer, Jackson Charles Haschemeyer, Ayslee Grace Herrick, one brother Jerry Allen of Quincy, two sisters Norma Kindhart and Judy Robeson both of Rushville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Ferris “Bud” Allen.
Terry enlisted with the US Army and served from 1962 to 1964, stationed in Orleans, France.
He began his life work as a farm hand then as a feed mill operator for Schuyler-Brown FS and Schuyler Grain. While at Schuyler Grain, he, Lela and Tony operated three dry fertilizer spreading trucks from 1977 to 1981, selling the trucks due to Terry’s health. He retired in January 2008 from Schuyler Brown FS.
Terry served as President of the Camden Village for 8 years and trustee for 12 years. During that time, he helped form the Camden-Littleton Water Commission, being a commissioner for 27 years. He attended the Camden United Methodist Church. In his youth, he enjoyed raccoon hunting with his parents and family, fishing and mushrooming. In retirement, he enjoyed taking his great grandchildren on rides on his side-by-side, mowing the grass, reading Western books and farming for Dennis Billingsley. His greatest time was attending and hosting family get-togethers.
Services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, December 18, 2017, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Reverend Charles Peart III and Pastor Charla Meyers officiating. Interment will follow in the Camden West Cemetery, with military rites by the US Army Burial Detail and the Schuyler American Legion Post # 4. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday, December 17, 2017, at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville. Memorials are suggested to the Camden United Methodist Church, Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice or Hope Blooms.
